Contract Setup Operator/Machinist

Position Summary

The Contract Setup Operator/Machinist must be able to setup and operate CNC and conventional machine tools, such as lathes, milling machines, boring machines, drill and punch presses, grinders and gear hobbers, according to specifications and tooling instructions, applying knowledge of machining methods.

Primary Responsibilities:

• Reads and understands blueprints geometric dimensioning and tolerances
• Ability to setup-touch off tooling in CNC type machines. Understand work coordinate systems involved in both CNC mills and lathes.
• Understands feeds, speeds and depths of cut to ensure machine efficiency and tool life longevity.
• Broad knowledge of various cutting tools and methods to include drilling, boring, turning, milling and grinding.
• Loads programs and verifies first-article parts.
• Reviews work instructions and specifications to determine proper procedure, machining sequence, and dimensions of finished work piece.
• Ability to work with various fixturing and clamping devices when needed in setups.
• Ability to read and understand set up work instructions.
• Able to read programs and modify or update as needed, including debugging alarm messages, using offsets and cutter comps, loading new programs and saving modified programs
• Observes and listens to machine operation to detect malfunctions such as worn or damaged cutting tools
• Understanding of solid or insertable tooling and knowledge of sharp or dull tools in order to change them before breaking or damaging parts
• Complete understanding and ability of using precision measurement tooling including micrometers, calipers, depth mics, drop indicators and test indicators. CMM knowledge desired.
• Ability to work in a team environment to learn and teach as needed
• Ability to make minor program edits at the machine.

Minimum Qualifications:

• High School Degree or
• 2+ years of related work experience on machining equipment, CNC preferred, such as mills or lathes in a manufacturing environment and can operate more than one machine at one time.
• Must be able and willing to provide setup guidance and coaching to less experienced machining
• Must have basic math skills, capability to perform calculations, print reading capability and familiar with using micrometers and
• Must display a history of taking ownership for problems, and a willingness to work as a team to root cause issues, and drive solutions.
• Must be able to demonstrate setup capability for one of the following machines groups: Swiss Machines, Grinders, Mills (vertical or horizontal), Lathes, Hobbs, or conventional manual machine tools, and have a willingness to learn additional machine groups.
• Experience with common controls (Fanuc, Haas, Mazak, Okuma, Siemens, etc…)

Physical Demands:

• While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; climb or balance; and stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl.
• The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 10 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, color vision and ability to adjust

Work Environment:

• The position may operate in an office environment, development lab and production
• While on the production floor, employee may be subjected to moving mechanical parts and will be required to put protection equipment such as safety glasses.
